OUIL404 -Study Task 5 - Collage and Ephemera

For this brief, I started out by just using printed out and photocopied images of jellyfish and coral to collage with, ripping them to create texture as I didn't think straight cut edges would have worked well with the aesthetic I was trying to create. I used a background of newspaper because I liked to way it worked with the paint and created more texture rather than just flat paint on paper.

I painted onto sheets of paper to transfer the paint to make this texture.
I using this technique is much more interesting than just putting paint onto paper.
Although I really liked this way of working I don't think it really works that well with collage because it ends up looking too busy and cluttered.

I really liked combining found image with illustration and different types of paper, but I think it started to look a bit cluttered and messy, so I tried to simplify it by not using as much paint or printed materials and just drawing on top of things instead.

OUIL405 - Studio Brief 2 - A Book of..

Research:

  • This was part of my second round of research, after sitting in Leeds uni campus for an hour and just watching people I saw that there were always groups of people who were dressed quite similar and a lot of the same fashion trends kept appearing. This made me want to go investigate further and look at recent fashion trends, and take the piss out of them.
Problem analysis:
  • I knew that I wanted to research further into stupid fashion trends but I didn't know how I could turn this into a book, I wanted it to be funny and interesting but I needed to figure out how to keep people interested in what I'm trying to say.
  • I went into TopShop and just looked for clothes that I thought looked pretty shit, as I was walking round I came up with the question 'what the fuck is that and who the hell would wear it'
Practical development
  • These photos helped me to start creating and developing the practical side of my book, as I started just doing quick sketches with my brush pen after I had got some inspiration from looking on different hipster Tumblr blogs.

These pictures are what inspired the question.

On my second visit I decided to focus on not just the shops in Trinity but 'hipster' and 'vintage' shops in general, because those sort of people are the ones that annoy me the most.

After looking round a few shops I started to notice some definite trends. Like animal faces on things, religious symbols and a lot of the clothes that were targeted towards young males were clothes that looked like something a granddad would wear. I wanted to look further into these trends and create something that would take the piss out of them and make people laugh and be relatable.
