OUIL404 - Line of Sight

For this task I wanted to do something different and not an obvious form of transport. I began thinking about doing something either in the sky, or under the sea, something like a hot air balloon, because there are a lot of elements that could be included in the image to give depth and line of sight.

I tried sketching the mermaid from different perspectives in order to see which was the best possible way of including line of sight and depth into my composition. This helped me decide what else I would put in my composition and where I would place them. I wanted to create kind of a fantasy scene, and because the image had to be monochrome, the obvious choice would be to use shades of blue, so I wanted to test media alongside composition in order to come up with the best final solution.

I found that although I really liked the vibrancy that oil pastels could produce and the way that they could blend to create a nice smooth colour that still had texture, it was too hard to create fine detail with the pastels, especially facial features, so I decided to use coloured pencils instead, because you could sitll get the fine blended colour just with a lot more detail.

Overall I'm really happy with the final outcome, I feel that it fulfills the brief, even though it doesn't have as much obvious line of sight as some of my other test sketches, I feel like the overall format and composition helps direct the viewers eye up the image and also the contrast between the dark purple and white highlights create depth. I am quite pleased with my choice colour and media because I think they compliment each other well. If I were to do this brief again I think I would change the perspective a little in order to make the image a little more interesting, other than that I don't think I would change anything.
