Summer 10 Brief.

During the Summer we were given a brief to complete, we had to create 10 10cm x 10cm illustrations, each image giving a visual representation of a point that we were given to work around.
Each point focused on something that we had done or experienced throughout the summer. Trying to develop each point as far as I could through sketching and mapping ideas helped me to come up with a simple image that explained the point quickly, I think that simple illustrations, depending on the context, are often the most effective way of communicating a point.

We were given feedback on our work in a mini group crit, which I found helpful both from the feedback I was given and also being given the chance to walk around and look at other peoples work, to gather ideas and think about the way they had approached the brief. One piece of feedback I was given said that my best work were the ones that incorporated type into the image, so I intend to put this into more of my work.

Also for part of the brief we were asked to branch off from the final images we had made and create new expanded ideas which could be made into some variation of A2 poster. At first I found it difficult to come up with new ideas and elaborate on the images I already had, but getting feedback from other people and looking at their work also helped me to come up with some fun and interesting starting places.

I had two main ideas that I wanted to make mini ideas out of, one was looking at beards and the other was playing around with weird looking fruit and vegetables. A few people suggested in their feedback that I should work with the beard idea, because there are a lot more things I could do with this idea rather than the fruit and veg one, and the beard one seemed more comical.
I started to develop the beard idea and wrote down a few possibilities, I came up with the idea of practical uses for beards, but found it too hard to come up with at least 10 good quality ideas. I also thought about doing sketches of beards that a certain type of man would have (looking at beard stereotypes) but again I thought that it would be hard to come up with enough variations that would all be of a high quality. In the end I decided to go with the idea to keep it simple and just illustrate different types of beards, I began by doing normal looking beards but while researching came across a few more weird types which led me onto trying to create more surreal beards.

Stupidest Brief Ever

For this brief we were asked to bring in an old piece of clothing which we would then have to customise and change in some way. A lot of people were quite abstract with their designs and changed the clothing quite a lot, however I wanted to try and stick with the design already on the shirt and work around it and incorporate it into the new design. The logo already on my shirt was a Virgo sign, I did some research around this and found that the Virgo sign is meant to signify motherhood and caring. I thought that the sign looked like birds feathers so I went with that and started to come up with some ideas for a mother bird design. I wanted to put a personal spin on the design though so I made the mother bird look angry that she has a baby, because I don't like children.
I enjoyed this brief because I found it challenging to come up with a nice image that would incorporate the existing tshirt design. I think that my finished product was successful however I think I should have used a different tool to apply the paint as the lines were not as crisp as I would have liked them to be.
