The Scared Monster was my favourite character design, I was trying to go for the deer caught in headlights look, and thought giving him animalistic features would make him seem more timid.
I imagined the Scared Monster to be quite small, this is where context will again make the image work better and better convey scaredness.
As well as him being cute he needed to look little and timid, so I tried to make him look a little bug like with the two big eyes and really small body. Giving him lots of legs I think helped with the jittery buggy vibes, definitely a scared looking monster.
I was super pleased with the final papercut guy, I think you can see that he looks quite small and scared, without him being in much context.
To create the textures on his body, I used a dry paint brush and gouache, which would make lovely dry textures, which I scanned in and used to edit some parts of the Monsters which didn't scan in very well.
Although creating textures was easy when papercutting, it was much harder to make delicate, thin limbs, and I don't think that the final image makes him look as scared and jittery as the first drawings, which is a bit dissapointing.
